TELCORD H Tablets: Side Effects, Use, And Precautions
TELCORD H is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems.
There are two active ingredients in the drug:
- Telmisartan
- Hydrochlorothiazide
We can understand how the drug works by looking at the components in the drug.
What Will We Learn?
1. Telmisartan
Telmisartan belongs to a group of medicines called “angiotensin-II receptor antagonists.
Angiotensin II is produced by your body.
It causes the blood vessels to narrow, thereby raising blood pressure.
Telmisartan blocks this effect of angiotensin II. This dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure.
Telmisartan is used for the treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure).
High blood pressure, if left untreated, can cause damage to blood vessels in various organs.
Thus, in some cases it can result in heart attacks, heart or kidney failure, stroke or blindness.
High blood pressure usually does not show symptoms before this type of destruction occurs.
Therefore, it is very important to have your blood pressure measured regularly and check if it is within normal limits.
Precautions while using Telmisartan
Do not use telmisartan in the following conditions:
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to telmisartan or any of the excipients in the medicine
- If you have completed the 3rd month of your pregnancy (it is recommended to avoid Telmisartan use during early pregnancy as well.
- If you have severe liver problems such as cholestasis or biliary obstruction (problems with the discharge of bile from the liver and gallbladder) or other severe liver disease.
If any of the above conditions apply to you, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Telmisartan.
Use telmisartan (component in TELCORD H) with caution in the following situations:
- If you have kidney disease or have had a kidney transplant
- If you have narrowing of the blood vessels of one or both of your kidneys
- If you have liver disease
- If you have a heart problem
- If you have high aldosterone levels (water and salt retention in the body with an imbalance of various minerals in the blood)
- If you have low blood pressure (may be due to excessive dehydration of your body or salt loss from diuretic therapy, low salt diet, diarrhea or vomiting)
- If you have elevated potassium levels in your blood
- If you are diabetic.
If you think you are or may be pregnant, please inform your doctor.
Telmisartan is not recommended during early pregnancy.
It should not be used in pregnancies older than 3 months.
This medicine can seriously harm the baby if used after the third month of pregnancy.
In cases where surgery or anesthesia is required, tell your doctor that you are using TELCORD H. Telmisartan (component in TELCORD H) is less effective in lowering blood pressure in blacks than in other races.
The use of telmisartan (component in TELCORD H) is not recommended in children and adolescents younger than 18 years.
If these warnings apply to you, even at any time in the past, please consult your doctor.
Please let your doctor know if you are taking any medication while using telmisartan (the component in TELCORD H).
Telmisartan Side Effects
- Sepsis (also called “blood poisoning”, a severe infection that manifests as inflammation throughout the body)
- Sudden swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (angioedema).
The side effects listed above are rare and should be seen with the doctor immediately if these side effects occur.
2. Hydrochlorothiazide
Another ingredient in the drug is Hydrochlorothiazide.
This ingredient is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
High blood pressure increases the workload of the arteries and heart.
Forcing the heart in this way for a long time causes the heart and arteries to not work properly.
This can damage blood vessels in the heart, brain, and kidneys, resulting in heart failure, stroke, or kidney failure.
Long-term high blood pressure can also increase the risk of heart attack.
Keeping blood pressure under control makes these risks less likely to occur.
This ingredient is also used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by congestive heart failure, severe liver disease (cirrhosis), kidney disease, or treatment with a steroid or hormone medication.
Hydrochlorothiazide is also a thiazide diuretic (water pill).
It increases urine flow.
This helps to reduce the amount of water in the body.
This component can also be used for other situations.
Side Effects of Hydrochlorothiazide
Most drugs with this ingredient are available by prescription only.
Like every drug, this drug may cause unwanted side effects, but these side effects do not appear in everyone.
It should be noted that the side effects listed below are not a complete list, and if any of these side effects occur, a doctor should be consulted.
Side Effects of Hydrochlorothiazide are listed below:
- Lower than normal blood pressure (especially when standing up after sitting or lying down)
- Dizziness

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The hydrochlorothiazide component is acceptable at 50 mg per day or less during lactation.
Doses of more than 50 mg can reduce breast milk production.
Pregnant women can accept drugs containing hydrochlorothiazide in low doses (12.5 to 25 mg per day).
Please talk to your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
